Separated from Stonington and named in 1724, North Stonington has a current population of roughly 5,000. This quaint town was founded on farming and mills that produced satin, silk, and wools. Post-Civil War era, the way of agriculture changed, and many farms reverted to forests. This explains the beautiful, vast land that currently encompasses North Stonington. However, the rapid economic and residential growth in the 1950s led to concern over the preservation of such rural charm. Thus, zoning restrictions were set in place in 1963 to limit large commercial development. Due to its beauty, North Stonington has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
